Not sure what you're looking for, but I've been trying to conquer some classics lately. Right now I'm reading The Brother's Karamazov by Dostoevsky and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Kesey (I loved the Jack Nicholson movie!)

I've been reading Cities of Salt. I'm not too far into it but its really interesting. I think the Avatar-type plot line is going to jump in: Jerks invade nature habitat because it has precious resources.
I recommend Atlas Shrugged. It's really, really long but it's such a good read. I was stuffed in it last summer.
Another good, just-for-fun book is How To Walk In High Heels by Camilla Morton. I got it as a gift. It's a girl's guide to everything. I love it.

Ooh, Dostoevsky... A bit thick. I guess my tastes run more towards science fiction/trashy vampire books like the Anita Blake series (which is ultra trashy, serious warning there).
I'm looking for an escape, but an easier read. Something like Devil Wears Prada or something!

I'm recently reading a classic: To Kill A Mockingbird. I had to read it for high school back in the days and I'm thrilled by the fact that it's the first book I read twice instead of throwing it into the next best corner.
Another awesome book I read as a beach book was Nightlight - a twilight parody. And Drink. Play. Fuck. - kind of another parody for this book... was it Eat. Pray. Love? Guess so.xoxo Isa ♥Posted 1 year ago # -
Gotcha! I've never been a big reader (I would like to change that) but I found this site online whatshouldireadnext.com that seems pretty nifty

Those sound so awesome. I read two and half Twilight books in high school. And then the books just started killing me. They were so cheesy. I couldn't do it.

@WhoaIsa - How is To Kill a Mocking Bird? I've never read it!

It's such a cute book and very well written. Though I gotta say that the beginning is a bit boring but it's totally worth reading it

@YasmeeButtons Ok I have to try that - sounds like a gem!

To Kill A Mockingbird is fantastic! I should re-read that. For another classic that's totally readable, you can try Camus' The Stranger. I'm reading A Little Princess, which is also a great movie. The only other book I read this summer is Paper Towns, and it's a quick read. I wrote a review here: http://shadesofsarah.wordpress.com/2010/07/22/book-review-paper-towns/

"Like Water For Elephants", not sure about the author. Also "the Perks of Being A Wallflower" is a great bok as well as "extremly loud and incredible close", they are impossible not to relate to.

I'm currently reading The Virgin Suicides, which is a really strange but awesome book. I just finished reading Eat, Pray, Love (started it before I realized the movie was coming out in a few weeks!) and it was absolutely amazing. I'd recommend it to everyone, it's one of the best I've ever read.
And this is absolutely a shameless plug, but my friends and I have a book club that we blog about, so if you need some book suggestions and want an honest perspective on them, you should check us out. We just started it a month or so ago, but it's collegebookclub.blogspot.comPosted 1 year ago # -
I've wanted to read Eat, Pray, Love for so long! I just need to get my hands on it. Pretty much every girl I know right now has been reading it so they appreciate the meaning of the story before the movie comes out. (Movies are always worse! D:)

Oh absolutely, I'm almost afraid to see the movie because I know that they can't even begin to make it as great as the book. You should definitely get a copy of it. I just gave mine to a friend yesterday to read and she's already halfway done with it because she loves it so much.

@vanillaism I will definitely have to check out your book club! Is it online only, or do you guys meet in person as well?
Posted 1 year ago # -
@Lesley Just online. We figured it would be easier since we all go to school in different places. We're kind trying to take a new approach to it with just sort of blogging about the books and our lives rather than the typical discussion that book clubs usually do.

Yea, I REFUSE to watch the movie until I read the book haha!
That book club idea sounds so awesome. What's the blog URL? Or have you started it yet?
Posted 1 year ago # -
The url is collegebookclub.blogspot.com . I'm so excited to see people interested in it! We started it at the beginning of summer, and the blog itself is only about a month old, but we try to post often.
And you must must must read the book before the movie! I think it comes out the 18th, so you still have time!Posted 1 year ago # -
It's adorable :D So how to discussions work? You should try to add a forum like this one...That might be good for keeping things organized.
Posted 1 year ago # -
We don't really have discussions as much as we just blog about the kinds of things we'd say in discussions. That way we can sort of read it at our own pace without strict deadlines and such. It's really casual and sort of random, though if we got a bunch of people interested a forum like this one would be really awesome.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Yea I'd definitely join in. Plus it's online so it's probably a ton more convenient for anyone who would want to join. You guys should consider branching out :]
Posted 1 year ago # -
I'll definitely run it by the other girls. We have loads of people who have shown interest in joining, mostly because it's overall a pretty casual thing. I'm excited to see interest in it outside of our immediate friend group.

@ktswep08-I read Water for Elephants last summer and loved it! If a book makes me cry, you know I liked it lol.
Earlier this summer I read The Lovely Bones, which I liked, but the movie TOTALLY disappointed me! I loved the affair between Abigail and the detective in the book, because it made her character more real. I feel like authors often either place mother characters on a pedestal (strong, invinsible, loving, perfect) or make them totally evil, but Sebold did an amazing job of making you not sure if you liked or disliked Abigail. But they just totally cut all of that out of the movie! Ugh.
Now, I'm reading Extemely Close and Incredibly Loud, which was recommended to me. Has anyone else read it? I am amazed at the quality of writing, but it is slightly abstract so I'm not 100% into it as some books.
Love that we're all book nerds! lol

I saw the Lovely Bones and I hadn't read the book. I liked it but I might have had a different view if I had read the book. Books are always a ton better because they're fueled by our imagination. :]

The movie The Lovely Bones was so different from the book it was ridiculous. The movie played up the fantasy and dreamy nature of the book way more than necessary, and killed the amazing story. I was seriously disappointed by it, the book is much darker than the movie. If it wasn't adapted from a book, the movie would have been awesome, but the fact that it was based on the book and deviated so far from it sort of tainted it. But oh well. If you liked the movie, you should read the book. I feel like it's one of those classic girl books.

Will do. I'm sure I'll have a LOT to say afterward from what you girls are telling me. :[

Aw I hope we're not ruining it for you or anything!

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books. I plan on rereading it after I finish with all of Chuck Klosteman's books. If anyone is interested in pop culture, they should check out Klosterman. Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs is one of the wittiest books I've read.

Haha no it's okay. I'd like to read it :]
